FANG+ Puts the UMPH Back into the Markets and Exchange Competition Blog,Commentary,Exchanges, OTC & Clearing,Financials,Interview,Investing & Trading,Mwiki

Hallelujah! The magical power of innovation from exchange competition in Chicago is alive and well after a noticeable absence. The NYSE FANG+ index at ICE Futures US is the most innovative and timely new contract I have seen since the Cboe introduced the VIX. Besides the FANG+ contract, we have the expectation of the CME Group and Cboe slugging it out later this year with competing bitcoin futures offerings. Earlier this year we had the CME Group resteal the Russell index complex from ICE, returning the contracts to the CME where they were  in 2007. The FANG+ sprang from this exchange…

“I believe that the next big trend in our industry is going to be far more customized, far more bespoke, and it’s all going to be available at low cost because of technology.” When Google was readying for its IPO in 2004, employees were given educational courses in finance and investing. Then senior vice president Jonathan Rosenberg was worried that Google employees — many soon to be minted millionaires — would be taken advantage of by all manner of asset managers and brokers. During the presentations, a series of notable figures all gave the same advice to Google employees, “don’t…

Observations & Insight Holiday Publishing Note Due to Thanksgiving, we will not be publishing this newsletter on Thursday or Friday. We will be back on Monday, albeit a few pounds heavier. A quick “Did you know?” about the holiday: Everybody has heard the old refrain that eating turkey makes people tired because of the amino acid tryptophan. However, turkey has pretty much the same amount of tryptophan as other meats and research shows that turkey doesn’t have any significant effect on drowsiness. In fact, simple overeating is the most common cause of post-meal lethargy. Tired or not, enjoy your Thanksgiving,…

Observations & Insight Bits & Pieces They call them the dog days of summer. We used to think that means sleepy and laid back. This month, it seems, it means we are working like dogs. Well, unless you are Jim Kharouf. Jim has been on holiday for the past two weeks, which added to the rest of our workloads. To be fair, though, Jim did put in a month of hard work before he left, finishing up three projects for John Lothian Productions, as well as a couple of editorial interviews. We will see him in the office for a…

Profiles: Blair Hull Interview,Video

It’s not every day you hear one of the most successful traders and businessmen in the industry say he got his start as a card counter in blackjack. “My brother-in-law told me that he made money in Lake Tahoe, enough money to pay for his vacations,” he said. “I said “Well, if you do that consistently, you should be betting a lot more money and you wouldn’t have to be an accountant.’ “ So Hull put his own money where his mouth was and took up the game of blackjack for five years learning probabilities and strategy. His success in…

First Read Keeping Tabbs on the Options Industry Sarah Rudolph – John Lothian News The outlook for the options industry is a lot less sunny than the skies in Miami Beach, if you listen to the Tabb Group’s Andy Nybo. The industry faces major challenges right now, including a lessening of liquidity, widening bid-ask spreads, and market fragmentation, Nybo told the audience Thursday morning at the Options Industry Conference in Miami Beach. A recent Tabb study found that these are particular problems for institutional traders, he said. Overall spreads have widened, but the tiering of liquidity has created a bifurcated…

Blair Hull – Getting the Edge: Blackjack and the S&P 500 Video

“What you need to be is persistent and disciplined in your strategy.” Blair Hull, founder and managing partner at Ketchum Trading, compares the similarities of playing Blackjack with trading the S&P 500. Hull is not only an experienced Blackjack player, but also has about 40 years of experience in the financial industry.
