First Read Goodbye SFOA, Hello ICDA Jim Kharouf – JLN Adapt or die is a well understood maxim in this industry. And so that’s been embraced by Dan Day-Robinson, the chairman and change merchant for the new International Commodities and Derivatives Association. It was and probably will be better known for some time as the former Swiss Futures & Options Association. I first started attending the SFOA’s big conference in 1998, when the SFOA Burgenstock conference was really something not to be missed. Located atop a classic resort overlooking Lake Lucerne, it was an event attended by the CEOs of…

Bürgenstock Revisited, Again Blog,Commentary

The SFOA Conference is in Survival Mode, But Has Hope The SFOA’s Bürgenstock conference concluded Thursday without fanfare and without its CEO present. A sparsely attended lunch was the last event on the docket. SFOA CEO Daniel Day-Robinson was reportedly in the hospital after falling ill Thursday morning of an unknown ailment. The conference reportedly attracted some 140 participants and some 40 regulators for a parallel program, according to SFOA sources. There was some cross-pollination of the regulators with the regular program, but not much, which was disappointing. There was a moment of silence at the beginning in the memory…

The 2015 Burgenstock SFOA conference in Geneva kicked off with a lively discussion on “Crossfire,” the well known panel hosted for many years by Patrick Young, the editor of Exchange Invest News. The panel was at odds over the horizontal versus the vertical clearing model.  Nasdaq strongly believes in the horizontal…

Daniel Day-Robinson has a big challenge in front of him. He wants the SFOA’s Burgenstock Conference to be relevant again. The new CEO of the Swiss Futures & Options Exchange took full control of the conference this year after partnering with the Futures Industry Association last year. The SFOA has offered 15% off the cost of the attendee charge of the Burgenstock Conference to readers of this newsletter. Use the JLD15 code when signing up at [[http://www.sfoa.org|www.sfoa.org]]. Of course the FIA is the 800-pound gorilla of international derivatives conferences, with major global events in London, Chicago, Boca Raton and Asia,…

A Complicated Relationship Blog,Commentary

John Lothian

Patrick Young is headed back to the Bürgenstock Conference of the Swiss Futures & Options Association for the first time in several years to host a rerun of the “Crossfire” panel he once popularized. He is bringing his well-known wit and blistering charm to this once legendary international forum of industry leaders. Burgenstock has not aged so well in the years since Crossfire was a thing. It lost its beautiful venue atop a mountain overlooking Lake Lucerne and has bounced around Switzerland to alternative locations that lacked the unique qualities of the Bürgenstock site. The new CEO of the SFOA,…

Paul-André Jacot; The Story of a Man, an Organization and a Conference; I Will Go To Bürgenstock This Year In Honor of Paul-André Blog,Regulation

Paul Meier, the longtime chairman and now honorary chairman of the Swiss Futures and Options Association, has written a tribute to his friend and SFOA colleague, the late Paul-André Jacot, who passed away last week. The tribute is about Paul-André, but it is also about the SFOA, its history and the Bürgenstock conference. While Paul-André has left this world for the next, the Bürgenstock conference still hangs on despite many predictions of its demise. The SFOA and Bürgenstock are part of my history too. Bürgenstock was my first overseas conference as the writer of this newsletter back in 2004. It…
