The CAT Scratches: Fees for Options Exchanges Blog,Options

I saw a MIAX press release about Consolidated Audit Trail (CAT) fee disputes and it got me thinking why there would be reason for dispute. Please note, I don’t know if the following is on any exchange’s collective mind, but it seems like point of contention. I’ll set the table with this stat from a Reuters story earlier this month – “Options execution venues with more than 1 percent of industry volume will pay $57,615 per quarter and those with less than 1 percent will pay $39,612 per quarter.” “Per venue” means per medallion/exchange. That means that MIAX would pay…

Options Industry Perspectives: Exchange Leaders Trade Viewpoints at OIC 2015 Blog,Options

Sarah Rudolph

At the Options Industry Conference this year, the exchange leaders panel directly followed a presentation by Andy Nybo, head of derivatives at The Tabb Group, that offered a rather bleak look at the options industry. Total volume year-to-date was down 8.7 percent compared to a year earlier, bid-ask spreads have been getting wider, and options exchanges are finding it difficult to compete in a field of 12-going on-14 players. JLN Options: Options Week in Review Newsletter,Options

Fears of the “fiscal cliff” had ramifications in the VIX and the VIX ETNs, which spiked higher as the equity markets declined. Trading of put options on Lockheed Martin’s stock jumped in the past week ahead of the surprise news that its incoming chief executive, Christopher Kubasik, had resigned over an affair with a subordinate, Reuters reported, adding that the spike is likely to draw the attention of regulators. Bloomberg reported that about 57,000 puts changed hands on Nov. 9.  Kubasik had been groomed to take over the position from Robert Stevens this January. Lockheed was already under scrutiny for…
