First Read Bits & Pieces By John J. Lothian Tomorrow I participate in a panel discussion at the Chicago Federal Reserve in a program put on by the Chicago Civic Federation. I will be talking about the history of this industry and its impact on jobs. I will also be sharing some of my thoughts on the importance of STEM for Chicago financial markets and the rest of the economy. I believe I have the right audience to share some of my ideas for making Chicago the STEM capital of the world. The title of the program is the uplifting…

Observations & Insight Bits & Pieces By John J. Lothian Sorry to start with the sad, but former CME President & CEO Clayton Yeutter has passed away at the age of 86. Yeutter was CME CEO when I started my post-collegiate career and I was lucky enough to cover a speech he gave about the Farm Bill of 1984 and the impact that would have on commodity prices. In happier news, I turned 56 on Saturday and my neighbors threw a parade a couple of blocks from my home in Elmhurst that attracted thousands of people wearing my favorite color,…

First Read The Case That Changed the Industry Jim Kharouf, JLN Back in 2005, I began covering a major development in the financial industry – patents. More specifically, I began covering the patent infringement cases by Trading Technologies against a number of firms including CQG. That case, which lasted almost 12 years with appeals, is now essentially settled by the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which affirmed the validity of TT’s patents, and essentially backed a lower court’s finding that CQG infringed on TT’s patents. The settlement awarded in the lower court was for $16 million. TT’s…

But with its acquisition of the New York Board of Trade (NYBOT) in 2007, ICE is now dominant in the global trading of soft commodities, as it acquired the lion’s share of the world’s sugar, coffee and cocoa derivatives trade. While the likely increase in contract volume once the deal has closed is not staggering, the geographical reach is…

Moby Dick

As we head toward the end of a rather difficult year for most exchanges, we also appear to be headed toward the next round of consolidation in the industry. IntercontinentalExchange (ICE) has pulled off the once unthinkable – It has bought NYSE Euronext. The deal, valued at $8.2 billion, is a blockbuster the industry hasn’t seen in a few years (LME-Hong Kong Exchanges notwithstanding), and it could launch the next round of consolidation in the industry. The futures and options markets have undergone dramatic and somewhat predictable changes in the past decade. The move from member-owned to publicly-owned exchanges opened…
