Twitter’s New Followers — CBOE and Social Market Analytics Team Up for New Sentiment Index Based on Social Media Data Blog,Feature,Mwiki,Options

Can you trade off of Twitter? The Chicago Board Options Exchange and its partner Social Market Analytics (SMA) believe so. The two firms are partnering on a suite of sentiment-based indexes that use tweet data to generate alpha. The first of the suite, the CBOE-SMA Large-Cap Index (SMLC Index), debuted on July 29. The index is simply published by CBOE at this point, but a tradeable contract may be coming. Joe Gits, CEO and co-founder of SMA, has been watching and monitoring Twitter for years. Feeling Sentimental: A New CME Group And Purdue University Indicator Shows Farm Sentiment Blog,Commentary

The University of Michigan developed its consumer sentiment index in the late 1940s and now it is a widely followed leading indicator of consumer behavior. Purdue University and CME Group hope to have come up with a similar indicator with the release of their Ag Economy Barometer. “We felt that there was an information void with respect to sentiment of producers in the agricultural sector and that coincided with what CME was looking for — they wanted something that matched up with what takes place in the macro economy,” said Jim Mintert, Purdue’s director of the Center for Commercial Agriculture…

Global Reach: CBOE to List MSCI Options, Expand its Index Coverage Blog,Commentary,Options


CBOE announced it will list options on the MSCI Emerging Markets Index and MSCI EAFE Index on April 21. The exclusive licensing deal with MSCI, is part of the CBOE’s efforts to expand its index coverage well beyond the US market. It also recently signed an exclusive deal to list FTSE and Russell Index products on CBOE. While those indexes have not traditionally drawn much volume on exchanges, CBOE believes that they will be able to garner more interest from traders and institutions by concentrating the liquidity onto its platform.
