Build or Buy? Exchanges Continue to Branch Out For Revenues Through Acquisition Exchanges, OTC & Clearing,Feature

Exchanges are continuing to look at two areas for revenue growth – consolidation and acquisition of non-exchange service firms, according to a new report from Burton Taylor. The report, presented at the World Federation of Exchange’s General Assembly and Annual Meeting in Athens and authored by Andy Nybo, shows that ICE topped exchanges in revenue in 2017 with $4.6 billion, followed by CME with $3.6 million, Deutsche Boerse with $2.7 billion, LSE Group with $2.5 billion and Nasdaq with $2.4 billion. The outlook for the options industry is a lot less sunny than the skies in Miami Beach, if you listen to the Tabb Group’s Andy Nybo. The industry faces major challenges right now, including a lessening of liquidity, widening bid-ask spreads, and market fragmentation, Nybo told the audience Thursday morning at the Options Industry Conference in Miami Beach. A recent Tabb study found that these are particular problems for institutional traders, he said. ISE Polishing Up New “Topaz” Exchange by Sarah Rudolph, JLN The International Securities Exchange is a few steps closer to making the already crowded field of U.S. options exchanges even more crowded.  On March 1, 2013, the Securities & Exchange Commission issued an order granting  “exemptive relief”  for ISE’s second options exchange, tentatively known as Topaz. This would bring the number of U.S. options exchanges to 12.  All four SEC commissioners have signed off on the filing and it can now be published for comments, according to an ISE spokesman.
