John Lothian Newsletter: MF Global Criminal Investigation Said to Slow After Quick Start; BME faces threat to Spain dominance; NYSE will gain whatever LCH.Clearnet outcome

MF Global investigators reveal the unsurprising news that they are proceeding very slowly after a quick start in the hunt for criminal charges. Spain’s BME exchange is feeling the squeeze from the arrival of BATS Chi-X Europe. NYSE Euronext, whether it wins the LCH.Clearnet race or not, stands to come out well ahead on the deal. More exchanges release monthly volume statistics, and in the top box you’ll find, among other things, links to FOW Magazine’s 30-Year Anniversary issue.

MarketsReformWiki, TV and JLN blog all up and running again
Apologies to everyone who tried and failed to access MarketsReformWiki, MarketsWiki.tv or the John Lothian Newsletter blog on Friday. The server had a hard drive failure early in the day that required the hosting company to repair the machine and clone the data, keeping those sites off the web until Saturday.

As best we can tell, no data was lost due to the failure; all edits and content on all sites appear to be current. MarketsWiki, which runs on its own separate server, was unaffected by the outage.

Obviously, there’s no way to prevent computer components from failing, but we’re not satisfied with the extended offline time. We’ll be looking into ways to greatly shorten the recovery time of the next component failure.

FOW’s 30 Year Anniversary Issue

Foreword

FOW 30 Year Anniversary: foreword by Sir Brian Williamson
Brutus, whilst not universally admired, surely got it right when, in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, he claimed that there was a “tide in the affairs of men, which, taken at the flood, leads on to fame and fortune”. It felt like that in 1980 when a handful of young, able people brought together by the irrepressible John Barkshire got together to work out how to build a financial futures exchange in London.
